Mark Winchester Demaree
Brother Mark Winchester Demaree was born on 27 July, 1894, in Franklin, Indiana. Son of Jasper Donaree [Demaree] and Maggie Winchester.
In the 1910 Indiana Federal Census – Johnson County, Union Twp, Mark’s occupation (at the age of 15) is listed as “Farmer/Farm Hand”.
He registered for the draft on 5 June, 1917, listing his occupation as “Farming”, employed by
“William Barnes”. He was unmarried at the time.
Mark was attached to the Headquarters Company of the 139th Field Artillery, 38th Division, as a Musician, 2nd Class, and sent to Camp Shelby in Mississippi. On 22 December, 1917, from the Masonic Temple in Hattiesburg, he wrote a letter to his sister, Miss Ray O. Demaree, asking to borrow 5 dollars.
He departed New York, NY on 6 October, 1918 aboard the Cedric.
He returned to the U.S. aboard the U.S.S. George Washington on his way to Camp Merritt.
Mark returned to Fort Harrison, along with the rest of his Company, the morning of 7 January, 1919.
He was released from service on 16 January, 1919.
In the 1920 Indiana Federal Census - Marion Co, Wayne Twp, Indianapolis City, Mark’s occupation is listed as “Bookkeeper/Civil Service”.
On 4 July, 1921, Mark married Ada M. Raschka in Starke County, Indiana.
In the 1930 Indiana Federal Census - Marion Co, Center Twp, Indianapolis City, Mark’s occupation is listed as “Clerical/Automotive”.
On 27 April, 1942, at the age of 48, he registered again for the draft, still married to Ada Demaree.
Brother Demaree passed away on 28 March, 1973.
