Howard Willard Kahler was born on 17 July, 1887, son of Willard Forrest and Margaret Kahler, in Hughesville, Pennsylvania.
Howard registered for the draft on 5 June, 1917. His residence was listed as in Ladquin, PA, where he was single and employed as a bookkeeper at the Laquin Store and Lumber Co.

Bro. Kahler enlisted in the Marine Corps on 26 December, 1917. He was awarded two medals for excellent marksmanship while training at Paris Island, SC and Quantico, VA. He spent some time in New York City and was shipped overseas around 22 April, 1917 attached to Company I, 6th Marines.
Bro. Kahler was killed in action on 22 June, 1918, in the Chateau-Thierry Sector and interred in France at Lucy-le-Bocage, Aisne. On 5 June, 1919, he was disinterred and reburied in Grave No. 105, Plot 3, Section S of the American Cemetery in Belleau, Aisne. In August, 1921, he was again moved and now rests in Williamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania.
